Feel free to get in touch with us about turf laying or turf installation. One of our friendly team members will be able to assist you with your choice of turf!

If you've been eyeing off that neighbourhood house with the lush, green grass for too long, then it might  be time to consider a turf upgrade.

Don't let a dry, weed filled front lawn devalue your home and make it look unkempt. If you are here, it means that you value the appearance of your home and  some freshly laid lawn will do just the trick.

We will handle acquiring the new grass and the delivery of he new grass to your property. We will then proceed to handle the digging up of old grass and the installation of your newly purchased grass

What's Involved in Laying New Grass?

Once the area to be re-turfed is identified, we will scrape back the land to remove all existing grass, weeds and the top layers of soil. These are then disposed of for your convenience.

Next a healthy, nutrient rich layer of soil is thrown down and levelled out so the lawn has a nice flat base.

Family friendly additives are then put into the soil such as water-absorbers to help the future lawn's moisture and prevent the need to water so frequently. This usually includes a mixture of composts and clays and soil wetters to prevent future hydrophobicity  of the soil.

The  selected lawn is then placed down  in a fashion that minimises gaps and lumps and bumps forming in the ground. The grass is then rolled to ensure the roots are making full contact with the soil to promote healthy growth.

A topsoil layer can then be used to fill in gaps between grass strips to ensure the ground remains level after the grass is established.

The grass will need a great amount of water over the next week or so in order for it's roots to settle into the ground firmly before we see  the grass really take off.

What Grass is the Best For My Land?

There are many variables to consider here.  But let's talk about some of the determining factors to consider when choosing a type of grass:

Pets
We love them! Often our furry friends spend a lot of time in our back yards and have a lot of interaction with it. The first thing that comes to mingd are our pups (large or small). If they have an affinity for digging, this damage to the lawn, you will want repaired as quick as possible, so picking a fast growing variety may be in your best interests.

Another thing to consider here  is their urine. Because female dogs tend to squat closer to the ground, their urine ends up in quite a small, concentrated spot which can often kill most grass varieties, leaving you with lovely spots all over your beloved grass.

If you have an energetic pup that loves to run tracks into the grass you will want something both hardy and fast growing. In summary, with pets, you're better off with a hardy and fast growing variety - the downside? More frequent mowing and whipper snipping

Foot Traffic
If you plan to use the grass often as a play area or  as a pathway, you should consider a fast growing variety also. Something with hardy blades can withstand being crushed underfoot also.

Shade and sunlight
Depending on where you are planning on laying your new turf,  it may be experiencing many hours of either sunlight or shade. Different varieties of grass will prefer different conditions. Another thing to consider is that they prefer different levels of moisture too. If your area is in highly shaded and you have had a bit of rainfall, it may take some time for that  ground to dry out. Drought -resistant varieties are likely to get sloppy and rot in conditions such as these. This leads to the next point.

Water Consumption
Whether you end up with shade or sun-tolerant varieties, they will have different requirements for their water consumption.  The type you choose can be influenced by a number of factors.  How often you are willing to water the lawn, how much you're willing to spend on your water-bill, how much rainfall your area experiences, how much sun/shade the lawn will experience. There are varieties of lawn that are more thirsty than others.

Hopefully these points will give you some idea of the conversations we will need to have before choosing the right lawn for your  property.

Post-Turf Laying Care

After having the desired lawn  installed into your property. There will be some necessary steps involved in its care while it is still in it's establishment  phase.

Firstly, try to keep traffic and animals off the newly laid section of grass for a while. It will need  to be watered every day for the first two weeks. With the soft ground as a result, pets and humans treading all over it frequently is really not going to do it justice.

You can slow down on the watering at the 4th week but still  consistent watering will be necessary. The goal with watering deeply and frequently is to get those grass roots to search long and deep for water. This helps to anchor the grass to the ground more firmly. It also affects the strength of the growth on top.

Generally with plants,  in general, the larger and prouder the root system, the stronger and healthier the growth above ground will be.

Usually after the 2 week mark, if you're finding the grass has enough roots to hold itself somewhat to the ground you can  go for a mow. Take it easy though and don't cut it too short - only take  off what you need to get it looking tidy.

When you water or mow your lawn, try to do it at the times of the day that are least strenuous to the grass. Don't water when the sun is hitting the grass full pelt as this creates a magnifying glass effect  which can dreadfully burn your lawn. Likewise when you cut the grass while the sun is  out in full, it will lose water too quickly as you have cut the top off and exposed the insides to further dehydration.

If you want to fertilise, after 6 weeks  a seaweed based root growth fertiliser is recommended.   Lastly, don't let leaves and debris accumulate on the turf. This starts all sorts of problems starting with fungal infections and sunlight deprivation.
